Sydney. It’s one of prettiest cricket grounds in the world, the Sydney Cricket Ground located in the middle of the city that’s famous for its Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.
The iconic images of these two monuments come alive as the world transits the completion of a calendar year to another. But to the cricketers and the fans it’s the venue called the SCG that brings memories of some of the greatest stalwarts of the game New South Wales and Australia have produced.
The first Test here was played between Australia and England in February 1882 and in all 110 Tests have been played here, 159 ODIs and 12 Twenty20 internationals. And in all 185 Test centuries have been recorded at here and Ricky Ponting has scored six centuries.
India’s champion and legend Sachin Tendulkar’s century of Centuries magnificent journey began here when he held the Australians in awe and admiration with an unconquered 148 in January 1992. Tendulkar carved out a 241 not out here in January 2004 and 154 not not again in January 2008. Tendulkar has a tally of 785 runs in nine innings. Overall Indian batsmen have scored 14 centuries here including the 167, his first century in January 2000. VVS has score three tons here including his first one, a 167 in 2000.
India have played four Twenty20 internationals here before the World Cup clash against the Netherlands, winning three and losing four. Rohit Sharna made a 52 here in 2016, and 23 in 2018.
An almost packed stadium on Thursday in the 46000 capacity stadium again reflected the support for the Indian team in these parts.
